Safety Alerts and Lessons Learned
ETA Safety Alerts are made available as a quick source of information on a specific safety or environmental topic that may be of interest. Safety Alerts are organized by category. There is also a search function. If you can't find what you need, please contact the ETA Safety Manager, Ron Scholtz X8137.

Hot plates are commonly used in laboratory areas. During inspections of several ETA lab areas, it was noted that there were some issues regarding proper use of hot plates that if not addressed, would result in a fire. Fires can cause injuries, significant disruption of lab operations, and loss of scientific data. Read about important precautions when using hot plates.

Ovens are used in laboratory areas during various laboratory processes including drying glassware, sample drying, melting, and chemical reactions. Read about important precautions to use when operating ovens in lab areas.
Bags of wipes/gloves in the hood areas and on counter tops have been observed with no identification written on them. There is no way for other workers to know if the contents are hazardous waste or non-hazardous trash. Improper mixing of wastes could occur. Follow these protocols for non-hazardous waste disposal.
