Hazardous, Universal, and Special Wastes

Hazardous Waste Container

Hazardous wastes are chemicals that need to be disposed and are flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic. Hazardous wastes must be properly identified with a red hazardous waste identification label. Each container is stored in a clearly identified "Satellite Accumulation Area" or SAA for less than 180 days prior to pick-up by the LBNL Waste Management Group. All hazardous wastes are stored in secondary containment trays and the hazards are properly segregated to avoid any incompatibilities.

Universal wastes are items that need special handling or disposal but are not considered hazardous wastes. This includes electronic wastes (e-waste) and fluorescent light bulbs.
